In 1909 a Kansas City lawyer with no formal theology degree published a Bible with footnotes that rewired American evangelical Christianity. Before him, almost none of this existed.

Cyrus Scofield — Who He Was

Published 1909 — Oxford University Press

Cyrus Scofield Presbyterian convert was a Kansas City lawyer and Civil War veteran with no formal theology training. He published the most politically consequential Bible in modern history.

1. Scofield had no formal theological education — he was a lawyer who came to faith as an adult
2. In 1909 with backing from Oxford University Press he published the Scofield Reference Bible — a standard King James Version with his own commentary footnotes on every page
3. The notes introduced dispensationalism — a theology that divided biblical history into seven eras and told readers that modern-day Israel was the fulfillment of God's prophecy to Abraham
4. The Bible sold over 2 million copies by the end of World War II — becoming known as the "Bible of fundamentalism"
5. It spread through Moody Bible Institute and in 1924 Scofield's disciple Lewis Sperry Chafer Dispensationalist founded Dallas Theological Seminary — which became the flagship institution training evangelical pastors in dispensationalist theology
6. Scofield's disciple Chafer trained a generation of pastors — his students included the teachers of Hal Lindsey Dispensationalist (Dispensationalist) and Tim LaHaye Southern Baptist (Southern Baptist), who took the theology mainstream through mass-market books
7. The line is unbroken: Scofield → Chafer → Dallas Theological Seminary → Lindsey/LaHaye → Hagee → CUFI → 10 million members → $14.3 billion in emergency military aid in 2024

What Religious Zionism Actually Believes — and Who Carries It Today

Religious Zionism teaches that the Messiah cannot come until Jews control the complete biblical land of Israel. This makes territorial compromise theologically impossible — and permanent conflict a religious necessity.

1. The movement has its roots in the Kach movement founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane — designated a terrorist organization by the US State Department, the EU, and Israel itself
2. It teaches that settling and controlling all of biblical Israel — including the West Bank and Gaza — is a divine commandment, not a political preference
3. Baruch Goldstein — a direct follower of Kahane — carried out the 1994 Cave of the Patriarchs massacre, killing 29 Palestinian worshippers at prayer in Hebron. Parts of the Religious Zionist movement venerate him as a martyr today.
4. Itamar Ben Gvir — National Security Minister — was a card-carrying member of the Kach movement, had a portrait of Baruch Goldstein on his living room wall, was exempted from military service at 18 because the Israeli army deemed him too extreme, armed 230,000 Israeli civilians with new gun licenses, withdrew police protection from humanitarian aid convoys — allowing settler attacks — and led prayer sessions at Al-Aqsa with songs about rebuilding the Temple. He is the direct institutional descendant of Kahane in government.
5. Bezalel Smotrich — Finance Minister — openly declared "there is no such thing as a Palestinian people," called for erasing a Palestinian village, and described himself in his own words as a "fascist homophobe." He controls settlement policy, budget allocations to the West Bank, and has threatened to collapse the government every time a ceasefire was discussed.
6. In January 2026, Netanyahu publicly backed changes to the long-standing status quo at Al-Aqsa allowing Jewish prayer at the site — a breach of the decades-old arrangement. He needed Ben Gvir and Smotrich's votes to stay in power. They got what they wanted.
7. The movement has consistently sabotaged ceasefire deals — Ben Gvir resigned from the government when a ceasefire was agreed in January 2025, then rejoined when military operations resumed in March 2025
8. Multiple Western governments including France, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia have banned Religious Zionist ministers from their territory for incitement and violence

American evangelical theology and Israeli Religious Zionism have completely different beliefs about what happens at the end. They converge on the same outcome — permanent conflict — for entirely different reasons.

The Scofield Bible, the Balfour Declaration, and the Federal Reserve were all built in the same 8-year window. That is not a coincidence. That is Part 4.

Eight Years That Built the Modern World — 1909 to 1917

1897 Theodor Herzl — First Zionist Congress, Basel Switzerland. Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist who watched crowds in Paris chant "death to Jews" during the 1894 Dreyfus trial and concluded that Jewish assimilation into European society was impossible — Jews would never be safe no matter how integrated they became. In 1896 he published "Der Judenstaat" — The Jewish State. In 1897 he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel: 200 delegates from 17 countries declaring the goal of establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Herzl wrote in his diary: "At Basel I founded the Jewish State. In five years perhaps, certainly in fifty years, everyone will perceive it." Israel declared independence in 1948 — 51 years later. Every person in the right chain of the connection graph above — Kahane, Goldstein, Ben Gvir, Smotrich — traces their ideological lineage directly to this moment.

1901 Samuel Untermeyer — prominent Zionist lawyer — documented to have met and promoted Scofield. Scofield joins the Lotos Club in New York alongside financiers and media figures.

1909 Scofield Reference Bible published by Oxford University Press. Dispensationalism — the theology that American Christians must support Israel — enters mainstream American Christianity for the first time.

1913 Federal Reserve Act signed. The US monetary system handed to a private central banking network. Samuel Untermeyer was deeply involved in its founding. The financial infrastructure of the 20th century is laid.

1917 Balfour Declaration. The British Foreign Secretary writes a letter to Lord Walter Rothschild promising a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The theological groundwork has been laid in America. The financial groundwork has been laid. Now the diplomatic groundwork is laid. All three, in eight years.
